Essentials

Summit Walks

Thomas Cook invents group tours and brings masses of visitors to the Swiss waterfalls, caves, gorges, and to a panoramic mountain world, which even 150 years later has lost none of its fascination and magic.

Alpine Hotels

In 1823 the first inn is opened on the Faulhorn, at that time the highest restaurant in the Alps.

First ascents

In 1387 the authorities in the town of Lucerne lock up a monk for flouting a ban on climbing the Pilatus, imposed in fear of evil spirits.

Alpine Huts

In 1863 the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) is founded. Today the SAC offers overnight accommodation in no less than 153 huts in the high mountains.

Rail- and Cableways

In 1871 the first European cogwheel train from Vitznau to Rigi Staffel is inaugurated. Rigi is that time Switzerland’s most famous mountain.
